Elias Krantz’s new album, Side Notes is built upon field recordings from Japan, old vinyl samples and tape loops. It seeks to liberate the past into a reimagined present.

The Side Notes project occurred alongside recording, mixing and producing artists and composers like Rebekka Karijord, Shida Shahabi and psych outfit Mackaper.

Even though the samples, loops and field recordings on Side Notes may scribble outside the frameworks established on earlier offerings, Krantz’s musical language is unmistakable. Asymmetrical melodies, driving rhythms and ambient analogue soundscapes. These elements, when combined, conjure a mix of melancholy and euphoria.

Krantz’s music finds inspiration from krautrock, 90’s hip hop, afrobeat and minimalism. For a long time he’s been deeply fascinated by the work of Japanese electronic music pioneers like Haruomi Hosono and Yasuaki Shimizu and several of the songs bloom from the field recordings Krantz made during a long stay in Japan.

The album is mixed by Daniel Ögren (Dina Ögon) and features musicians Reine Fiske (Dungen), Shida Shahabi and Christopher Cantillo (Franska Trion, Dina Ögon). These collaborators, each approaching the soundscapes from different angles weave together what might have otherwise been loose ends, into a coherent whole.

The accomplishment of this completion is the endlessly open endedness of Side Notes.
